At Thompson Boat Center, we take great pride in the quality of our instructional, community and recreational programs. We currently offer programs that teach individual about the sport of rowing, and offer instructional programs in single person (sculling) boats and 4-person or 8-person (sweep) boats. We have community and recreational programs for every age and experience level. No matter if you're currently in school, looking to return to the sport you loved in college, or seeking to prepare for a step into the national ranks, we have a program for you. Select your program type below (please note that we offer sculling programs for Juniors and Active Adults in addition to our regular Learn to Row) and let us show you what we have to offer.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, no exceptions.
Refund Policy: Full refunds will be provided to anyone withdrawing from a class at least 24 hours in advance. A 75% refund will be provided to anyone withdrawing in the last 24 hours before the start of a class. All other requests for refunds are at managements' discretion. No refunds are provided after the second day of a class.
LEARN TO ROW BEGINNER'S SCULLING- $150 |
The Thompson boat Center Learn-to-Scull program is designed to give basic safety and handling instructions for the use of the 1-person sculls rented by the boathouse. Graduates of this class will receive a certification card that enables them to rent TBC hulls. This class is ideal for those looking for a new form of recreation and fitness. Rowing is an excellent low-impact cardiovascular activity, and the Potomac River runs through miles of national parkland and monuments, offering a beautiful setting for this activity. |
Learn-To-Scull has three time slots: 6:15-7:45am, 4:00-5:30pm, and 5:45-7:15pm (**unless otherwise noted below)

JUNIOR LEARN TO ROW SWEEP - Session 1 - $250 |
| This introductory class is designed for youth ages 13 - 16 who are interested in getting a start with the sport of rowing. The two week class will introduce basic boat-handling and technical skills, and teach new rowers the basics of the sport. Graduates of this class can take "Learn to Row Session 2", or move into their high school's novice program. Please note that a minimum of 5 students will be needed for a session to run. |

JUNIOR NOVICE Sweep - $125 |
| Junior Novice Sweep 2 is designed for youth ages 13 - 16 who have taken either the TBC Junior Learn to Row Sweep, Session 1, or a camp program of similar length elsewhere. Building on the basic skills introduced in the previous class, Session 2 will begin to teach more advanced drills and technical issues, and teach the basics of effective and powerful boat moving. Graduates of this class can join the Fall Junior Developmental squad, or their high school's novice program. Please note that a minimum of 5 students will be needed for a session to run. |

JUNIOR LEARN TO ROW SCULLING - $150 |
| A sculling class for the high school sweep rower.This class is designed to give the rower a better understanding of set and stroke through the use of a scull. Class is primarily on water and is taught in singles, doubles and a quad. All rowers should be prepared to take a flip test by the end of the week. All rowers completing this class will be issued a certification card and will be allowed to rent singles at TBC on receipt of Letter of Permission signed by a parent or guardian. |

LEARN TO ROW SWEEP - $250 |
The Learn to row sweep program at Thompson Boat Center teaches the use of the 4- and 8- person rowing shells. This class leads into the intermediate and community and recreational adult sweep programs, focusing on the basic techniques required to safely operate a rowing shell, basic fitness, teamwork training, along with all aspects of the sport of rowing. It's ideal for those looking for a low-impact, cardiovascular team sport; come with friends or come meet a new group of people while engaging in a great fitness activity. Learn to Row is a two week program, beginning on Monday and ending on the second Friday. Classes can accommodate a maximum of 10 people per session. There are two sessions per day for learn-to-row. All morning sessions will run from 6:00 AM-7:30AM. All afternoon sessions will run from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM. If you wish to sign up for a class that is already full, you will be given the opportunity to be placed on a wait list for that session.
Because registration for this class fills one of a limited number of slots, full refunds will be provided to anyone withdrawing from a class at least 24 hours in advance. ACTIVE ADULT BEGINNER'S SCULLING- $150 |
An opportunity for those 50 and over to learn to row at a more leisurely pace on the lovely Potomac River during a quieter period of the day. This course is taught with emphasis on the pure enjoyment and beneficial physical and mental aspects of rowing. |
Classes will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Please Note: You must be able to swim short distances to take this course.
